The
Washington was a laker sloop, built by Americans on Lake Erie in 1797 and owned by Canadians. She was working the commerical trade across Lake Ontario when a gale in 1803 sank her with all hands. Her wreck is the second oldest ever found in the Great Lakes. She represents an unusual type of ship of which little is known, and further work on her site will open a new window into early American-Canadian history between the Revolution and War of 1812.
