It probably was mekwars or megamek.net or whatever. The difference between them is not well defined in my eyes at least.
Now I take time and explain to y'all thoroughly what those are and what they mean.

MegaMek
It's a stand alone computer wargame that follows rules of Total Warfare almost by letter. Much of the rules of Tactical Operations are also implemented and those can be turned on and off from lists of checkboxes. By default, game is set to play as detailed in Total Warfare only. Game can be played on-line, where one computer acts as host and other computers (clients) join to it by using host's IP address. Offline hot-seat is also available, which works much the same way: each player starts game on same computer, one acts as host and other players join to it by using localhost in place of IP address. Game can also be played against computer (bot).
MegaMek can be downloaded from SourceForge.net

MegaMek.NET
First on-line version of MegaMek. At first it was only real time chat environment and list of active hosts, but it was developed to MMO type game where players join to factions (Lyran Commonwealth, Draconis Combine, Mercenaries etc.) and conquer planets from other factions by fighting against their respective players. Game chose maps randomly from available files. MegaMek.NET was also name of the game server. Both were later renamed to MegaMekNET.

MegaMekNET
Much improved version of original MegaMek.NET. Improvements included Random Map Generator and dynamic BV. Given world has lists of parameters which affects to randomly generated map. Dynamic BV changed unit's BV based to its win/loss ratio. These are still part of the game, now called MekWars.

MekWars
At some point of time development team of MegaMekNET had different opinions about future development of the game. As result, team split up (like ComStar), and separatists (Word of Blake) named their game MekWars. Eventually development of MegaMekNET ceased and teams merged back together to continue development of MekWars. MegaMekNET remains as name of the game server, but there are other MekWars game servers with different configurations (and names).
MekWars home page offers MekWars game client for MegaMekNET server and links to other useful pages and files. Like tracker page which lists all MekWars servers and their current status.

All the mentioned software are coded with Java, which means same code (should) work equally in PC and Macintosh alike. This requires installation of appropriate Java Runtime Environment.

Yes. MegaMek comes as part of each MekWars client software. Furthermore MekWars clients have been customized for each campaign server and therefore given client software should not be cross-used to connect to another MekWars server. MekWars clients can search, download, and install software updates automatically (when connecting to server), but MegaMek doesn't have that feature (as it doesn't connect to any server).
